This dissertation, O OGRO QUE VIROU PRÍNCIPE: UMA ANÁLISE DOS INTERTEXTOS PRESENTES EM SHREK, is in the area of Children Cultural Production, and it makes an interface between children’s literature and children’s movies. The object of study of this dissertation are the movies Shrek I and Shrek II, along with William Steig’ book with the same title, and all the fairy tales mentioned by the movies. We investigate the way the intertextuality between movies and verbal stories are represented. As a theoretical background, we use many theories and authors on intertext and intertextuality. From Lotman, we have the ideas concerning movie story-telling; the text analysis was based on the actant model proposed by Greimas. We researched the origins of fairy tales and the evolution of children’s literature. We emphasize the term tale and the characterization of its structure. As our main focus is on movie stories, we show a brief history of animated films, specially about the production made for children. We also analyze the tale Sleeping Beauty (in the versions by Perrault and the Grimm brother’s), the book Shrek, written by William Steig, and the movies Shrek I and II. We attain for the intertextual elements and parody, sometimes reaching the point of grotesque parody. Our analysis is not limited to the textual structure, but we also look at the adaptations of the characters for the movies. The book Shrek, by Steig, after which the movies were named, was also used as an intertextual element. We also identify many references to adult movies. Our research testified that the traditional resurrects and joins the modern in cultural productions for children. This shows that oral literature is still important, specially when it comes to fairy tales. Their themes still fill the children’s imagination, because they are universal and are taken by the contemporary film industry.
