Jornalismo literário, journalism of attachment e a Guerra Civil Espanhola: uma análise da obra A árvore de Gernika

Abstract

Este trabalho de conclusão de curso se propõe a analisar o livro A Árvore de Gernika: Um estudo de campo da guerra moderna, do jornalista inglês George Steer. A obra, cuja primeira edição foi publicada em janeiro de 1938, conta em detalhes a luta dos bascos, povo da região norte da Espanha, por sua autonomia e liberdade durante a Guerra Civil Espanhola (1936-1939). Para a realização do trabalho, foi feita primeiramente uma pesquisa bibliográfica para a contextualização e entendimento dos conceitos de jornalismo literário e journalism of attachment. Na sequência, é apresentada uma recapitulação dos principais eventos da guerra para que se obtenha um entendimento geral do conflito. Posteriormente, as leituras preliminares serve para embasar a análise do livro. A metodologia escolhida para este fim foi a análise de conteúdo. Durante a análise, é apresentada a ideia de que o jornalismo praticado por Steer pode ser categorizado como journalism of attachment pois o jornalista claramente defendeu a causa basca durante sua cobertura por compartilhar valores e ideais semelhantes ao do povo basco. O jornalismo literário está presente na obra como um recurso para a construção da narrativa.

The objective of this monography is to analyze the book The Tree of Gernika: A field study of modern war, written by British journalist George Steer. The book, which first editions was published in January, 1938, explains in details the Basque people fight for its autonomy and freedom in the north part of Spain during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). For the fulfillment of this work, one has done a bibliographical research in order to understand and contextualize the concepts of literary journalism and journalism of attachment. Subsequently, it is made a fast recapitulation of the war and its most important moments in order to contextualize the conflict. Afterwards, the previous readings serve the purpose to give the theoretical ground in order to better understand the analysis. During the analysis, the methodology used is content analysis. Furthermore, it is introduced the idea that Steer’s work might be categorized as journalism of attachment for the journalist clearly defended the Basque cause while covering the conflict. It is concluded that it is possible to argue that it Steer’s coverage of the Spanish Civil War is journalism of attachment because the reporter shared the same democratic values as the Basque people did. The journalist ultimately uses literary journalism techniques in order to tell the story of the war.
