A firmeza do solo e as formas de sua perda: a tensão no espaço do lar pela perspectiva de Ludovica em Teoria Geral do Esquecimento de José Eduardo Agualusa

Abstract

O romance Teoria Geral do Esquecimento, de José Eduardo Agualusa (2012), aborda o período de Independência de Angola e perpassa a violenta Guerra Civil Angolana. Além de tratar da questão da construção das identidades angolanas de uma maneira disruptiva, o romance traz à tona questões intrínsecas ao ser humano e a suas maneiras de experienciar e perceber o espaço do lar, por meio da personagem Ludovica. Esta é uma mulher portuguesa que mora em Luanda e que constrói uma parede no corredor do prédio, em frente à única porta do apartamento onde vive, alguns dias antes da Independência de Angola. A personagem fica encerrada no apartamento por 28 anos, acompanhada somente por seu cão, Fantasma. A relação de Ludovica com o apartamento é complexa, já que ela constrói um espaço ambivalente. Por um lado, este tem aspectos positivos, por protegê-la do espaço externo, perigoso para uma mulher portuguesa nos eventos históricos abordados; por outro lado, esse espaço também tem aspectos negativos, pois faz com que ela viva encerrada, sozinha, sem liberdade, sem materiais básicos de subsistência, entre outras adversidades. Diante dessas observações, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar como se estabelecem as tensões presentes no espaço de Teoria Geral do Esquecimento pela perspectiva da personagem Ludovica, a partir de valores tradicionalmente atribuídos ao lar. Também se propõe uma reflexão sobre como a perspectiva da personagem contribui para um olhar mais atento sobre os espaços extratextuais. Para isso, parte-se dos conceitos de personagem ficcional e de componente físico do espaço da narrativa, dos pesquisadores Luis Alberto Brandão Santos e Silvana Pessôa de Oliveira (2019); dos estudos sobre o espaço vivenciado, do filósofo Otto Friedrich Bollnow (2019); e dos estudos do geógrafo humanista Yi-Fu Tuan (1980; 2015) sobre espaço e lugar.

The novel General theory of oblivion, by José Eduardo Agualusa (2021), addresses the period of the Independence of Angola and permeates the violent Angolan Civil War. In addition to dealing with the issue of the construction angolan identities in a disruptive way, the novel brings up inherent matters to human beings and their ways to experiencing and perceiving the space of the home through the character Ludovica. This is a portuguese woman who lives in Luanda and who builds a wall in the building’s corridor, in front of the only door of the apartment where she lives, a few days before the Independence of Angola. The character remains locked up in the apartment for 28 years, accompanied only by her dog, Phantom. Ludovica’s relationship with the apartment is complex, as she builds na ambivalent space. On one hand, this has positive aspects, as it protects her from the external space, which is dangerous for a Portuguese woman in the historical events discussed; on the other hand, this space also has negative aspects, as it makes her live confined, alone, without freedom, without basic subsistence materials, among other adversities. Given these observations, the objective of this paper is to analyze how the tensions present in the space of the General theory of Oblivion are stablish from the perspective of the character Ludovica, based on values traditionally attributed to the home. It also proposes a reflection on how the character’s perspective contributes to a closer look at the extratextual spaces. For this, it starts from the concepts of fictional character and the physical component of the narrative space, form the researchers Luis Alberto Brandão Santos e Silvana Pessôa de Oliveira (2019); the studies about the experienced space, by the philosopher Otto Friedrich Bollnow (2019); and the studies of humanist geographer Yi-Fu Tuan (1980; 2015) on space and place.
