A desconfiança sobre os indivíduos de origem germânica em Porto Alegre durante a primeira guerra mundial: cidadãos leais ou retovados?

Abstract

O presente trabalho aborda os efeitos da Primeira Guerra Mundial na cidade de Porto Alegre. Sendo um evento cuja repercussão tem recebido pouca atenção da historiografia brasileira, este trabalho pretende trazer alguma contribuição para o estudo da influência desse conflito sobre a condução da política interna e sobre as relações sociais naquela cidade. A base sobre a qual se sustenta está constituída pela documentação produzida pelo governo da municipalidade e pelo governo do estado, bem como por informações extraídas das páginas de diferentes periódicos publicados na cidade entre os anos de 1914 e 1918. Mais especificamente, busca-se entender o quanto o conflito mundial afetou a convivência dos habitantes de origem germânica com os demais, algo que impõe a consideração da turbulenta trajetória da imigração germânica no estado do Rio Grande do Sul e a opinião crítica de alguns importantes intelectuais brasileiros que questionavam os benefícios da mesma para a construção de uma nação. Para tanto, são levantados os incidentes ocorridos ao longo desses anos, com vistas a obter possíveis explicações que as justifiquem. Além disso, apresenta-se o quanto a política institucional, marcada pela rivalidade dos partidos Republicano e Federalista, repercutiu a divergência de opiniões sobre os países que compuseram a Tríplice Aliança e a Tríplice Entente.

This work addresses the effects of the First World War in Porto Alegre. Being an event whose impact has received little attention of the Brazilian historiography, this work aims to bring some contribution for the study of the influence of this conflict about the conduct of internal politics and social relations in that city. The basis on which it is maintained is constituted by the documentation produced by the municipality and state government, as well as information extracted from the pages of different journals published in the city between 1914 and 1918. More specifically, we try to understand how the World War affected the coexistence of Germanic people with others inhabitants, something that requires the consideration of the turbulent history of German immigration in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and the critical opinion of some important Brazilian intellectuals who questioned its benefits to build a nation. For this, we raised the incidents over the years, in order to obtain possible explanations that justify them. In addition, we present how the institutional policy, marked by the rivalry of the Federalist and Republican parties, reflected the divergence of opinions on the countries that formed the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente.
