As paisagens emocionais: expressões existenciais no filme Encontros e desencontros de Sofia Coppola

Abstract

Esta monografia apresenta um estudo sobre como as imagens no filme Encontros e Desencontros (Lost in Translation, 2003) de Sofia Coppola são capazes de representar as emoções de seus personagens e como a diretora se utiliza deste artifício para construir uma atmosfera melancólica e existencial durante toda a obra. O objetivo principal deste estudo é investigar esta relação entre imagem e emoção que existe no filme através da pesquisa bibliográfica e da análise fílmica. Para tal, foram definidos como objetivos específicos entender o papel da emoção dentro da arte cinematográfica com a função de envolver o espectador, organizar algumas perspectivas importantes sobre a busca de significados da imagem fílmica dentro das teorias do cinema, entender o estilo cinematográfico que norteia o universo artístico da diretora e como estes elementos se relacionam dentro do filme. A fundamentação teórica é baseada principalmente em textos de Mulvey (1974), Xavier (1983), Bachelard (1993), Augé (2002), Morin (2003), Smith (2003), Galt (2009), Soares (2012), Júnior (2014), Gama (2016), Guéron (2018), Rogers (2018) e Calicchio (2020). Como resultados do estudo, podemos entender como a diretora se vale dos recursos da imagem fílmica para estabelecer a atmosfera emocional de seus personagens no filme. Durante o processo de criação deste estudo, o pesquisador desenvolveu o termo paisagem emocional a fim de caracterizar as imagens fílmicas que conseguem representar as emoções dos personagens que constituem a narrativa.

This monograph presents a study on how the images in Sofia Coppola's movie Encontros e Desencontros (Lost in Translation, 2003) are able to represent the emotions of the characters and how the director uses this device to build a melancholic and existential atmosphere throughout the entire work. The main objective of this study is to investigate this relationship between image and emotion that exists in the movie through bibliographical research and the film analysis. Therefore, specific objectives were defined as understanding the role of emotion within cinematographic art with the function of involving the spectator, organizing some important perspectives on the search for meanings in the filmic image within cinema theories, understanding the cinematographic style that guides the director's artistic universe and how these elements are related within the movie. The theoretical foundation is mainly based on texts by Mulvey (1974), Xavier (1983), Augé (1992), Bachelard (1993), Morin (2003), Smith (2003), Galt (2009), Soares (2012), Junior (2014), Gama (2016), Guéron (2018), Rogers (2018) and Calicchio (2020). As a result of the study, we can understand how the director uses the resources of the filmic image to establish the emotional atmosphere of the characters in the movie. During the process of creating this study, the researcher developed the term emotional landscape in order to characterize the film images that manage to represent the emotions of the characters that make up the narrative.
