Cosmic horror vibrations : H.P. Lovecraft and Heavy Metal

Abstract

Este estudo sugere uma análise da conexão entre a literatura de horror e o gênero heavy metal. Considerando que a relação entre literatura e música vem de tempos distantes, nós vamos discutir como estes tipos diferentes de arte podem convergir e inspirar novas criações. A inspiração para este trabalho vem de uma pesquisa anterior com um tema semelhante, na qual um conto e um poema escritos por Edgar Allan Poe foram comparados a duas canções de heavy metal, com a ajuda dos pensamentos sobre transcriação elaborados por Haroldo de Campos (2015). Nós iremos analisar duas narrativas de horror cósmico de H. P. Lovecraft, procurando pelas semelhanças e conexões entre elas e duas canções: “Behind the Wall of Sleep” de Black Sabbath, e “The Thing That Should Not Be” de Metallica. Nesta pesquisa, também iremos considerar os pensamentos de Nathalia Pinto (2014) sobre música e literatura, e Luiz Tatit (2004) sobre composição e expressão musical.

This study suggests an analysis of the link between horror literature and the heavy metal genre. Considering that the relationship between literature and music comes from distant times, we will discuss how these different types of art can converge and inspire new creations. The inspiration for this work comes from a previous research with a similar theme, in which a short story and a poem written by Edgar Allan Poe were compared to two heavy metal songs with the help of the thoughts on transcreation, elaborated by Haroldo de Campos (2015). We will analyze two cosmic horror narratives from H. P. Lovecraft, searching for the similarities and connections between them and two songs: “Behind the Wall of Sleep”, by Black Sabbath, and “The Thing That Should Not Be”, by Metallica. In this research, we will also consider the thoughts of Nathalia Pinto (2014) on music and literature, and Luiz Tatit (2004) on musical composition and expression.
